Power of Interviews

YOUTH COALITION

a youth-led statewide campaign that integrates participatory action research and youth-adult partnerships to intersect the issues of social media, mental health, and safety features.

In collaboration with Liza Gak, a PhD candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, Hope Youth participated in a 4-month research study. Youth Leaders conducted 10 interviews to hear directly from youth, parents, teachers, and social media experts.

Youth Participatory Action Research

An innovative approach to positive youth and community development based in social justice principles in which young people are trained to conduct systematic research to improve their lives, their communities, and the institutions intended to serve them.

NARROWING RESEARCH TOPICS

Youth Leaders practiced concept mapping to create an original and unique angle of tackling the following themes: Mental Health, Ads and Algorithms, and Cybersecurity and Safety.

A few ideas for subtopics included:

  • unique population

  • new technology or feature

  • specific location or time period

  • figuring out the overlap with a different topic

  • learning who is involved, root causes

  • role of politics, culture, environment, and economics

building open-ended questions

  • usually start with Who/What/Where/Why/How

  • cannot be answered with a Yes/No

  • “Tell me about your experience…”

  • encourages deep and detailed sharing

  • focuses on the lived experiences of the interviewee
