We are a California statewide coalition organizing to engage the larger online community, in promoting age-appropriate, transparent, and youth-led messages. Young people find themselves on social media for hours scrolling endlessly and absorbing harmful messaging.

HOPE builds media literacy amongst youth to assess how harmful messages impact youth’s mental health and advance policies to enforce stronger protections on online platforms.

HOPE youth leaders designed and collected social media diaries, including insights about user behaviors, activity, and experiences utilizing different types of social media platforms. Youth leaders reflected on their social media use and frequency, mental health and wellness, social media comparison content, and community engagement.

In collaboration with Liza Gak, a PhD candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, Hope Youth Coalition ‘23-’24 participated in a youth participatory action research study. Youth Leaders conducted 10 interviews to hear directly from youth, parents, teachers, and social media experts.
